20 Crore Doesn’t Matter Once IPL Starts: KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer on Price Tag Critics

    adminBy adminApril 4, 2025

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the hefty price tags in the Indian Premier League (IPL), asserting that once the tournament kicks off, money becomes secondary to performance. His statement comes amid discussions about the impact of high auction prices on player pressure and expectations.

With franchises spending exorbitant amounts on star players, IPL auctions often generate headlines for record-breaking bids. However, Iyer believes that once the tournament is underway, a player’s price tag ceases to be a talking point. “It doesn’t matter if you were bought for 20 crore or 2 crore. Once the IPL begins, it’s all about how you perform on the field,” he said in a recent interaction.

The left-handed batsman and medium-pace bowler, who has been a crucial part of KKR’s setup, emphasized that players focus on their game rather than the numbers attached to their contracts. “At the end of the day, it’s a team sport, and individual price tags don’t win you matches—performances do,” he added.

His comments resonate with the pressures many high-priced players face in the league. Over the years, several cricketers have admitted to feeling the weight of expectations after securing big contracts. However, Iyer believes the best approach is to concentrate on delivering consistent performances rather than dwelling on external noise.

Venkatesh Iyer, who himself made a strong impact in the IPL with his aggressive batting and useful bowling, understands the dynamics of the league well. Having been a key player in KKR’s campaigns, he is familiar with the intense scrutiny that follows top buys every season.

As the IPL season progresses, all eyes will be on the most expensive players of the auction. While critics may continue to analyze their performances through the lens of their price tags, Iyer’s perspective offers a valuable reminder that in cricket, it is skill and execution that ultimately define success.
